Macias' research looks to the Native American Fancy Shawl dance as a site of gender defiance and gender expansive being for women and gender diverse (Two Spirit and Indigiqueer) peoples. Macias' research actively traces histories, the emergence, and contemporary practices of Fancy Shawl Dance. In related work, Macias has traced connections between the Native American Fancy Shawl dance, and Indigenous Burlesque Artists who drew from Fancy Shawl in the creation of their works, arguing for the connection between contemporary Native women, Two Spirit, and gender diverse artists to that of the early Fancy Shawl dance creators. In writing and research, Macias' weaves her own experiences as a Fancy Shawl dancer, Pole dancer, and Indigenous person, turning to her own body as part of her methodological approach.
Macias has presented her research at the Blackfoot International Research Conference hosted by the Blackfeet Nation (2023 & 2022), the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association Conference (2023), the Gender & Sexuality Symposium at Brandeis University (2022), and the Dance Studies Association Conference (2022 & 2021).
